Variable-length Application Identifier data is what separates GS1 DataBar Expanded from the fixed base variant: alongside the GTIN it accepts net weight, price, lot number, and expiry date, reaching 74 numeric or 41 alphanumeric characters. The symbol may be printed as a single row or stacked into several rows where label width is constrained. A 34 mm nominal height and single-module quiet zones accompany the 0.264 mm X-dimension shared across the DataBar family. Variable-weight fresh produce and coupons carrying complex offer conditions are the two applications that justify the additional symbol area. GS1 introduced the format in 2001. Like the rest of the family it is a GS1 data carrier, and its data field is defined entirely by Application Identifier syntax.

An extension of GS1 DataBar that supports variable-length data with Application Identifiers, enabling encoding of weight, price, lot number, and expiration date alongside the GTIN. Used at point of sale for fresh produce with variable weight and for coupons with complex offer data.
