GS1-128 adds batch, date, weight, and serial data under Application Identifiers but needs a printed label. Whether the case must convey attribute data decides between them, and many cases carry both.

What each symbol can carry

ITF-14 encodes exactly fourteen numeric digits: a GS1 Standards & Identifiers">gtin-14/" class="glossary-term-link" data-term="GTIN-14" data-definition="14-digit identifier for ITF-14 barcodes on cases and pallets." data-category="GS1 Standards & Identifiers">GTIN-14 identifying a trade item at case or pallet level, closing with a Mod 10 check digit. Nothing else fits, because the symbology defines no mechanism for declaring what a data element means.

GS1-128 solves that with Application Identifiers. A two- to four-digit AI precedes each element and declares its meaning and format, so a single symbol holds a GTIN under (01), a batch under (10), a production date under (11), an expiry date under (17), a serial number under (21), and a net weight under (310n). An FNC1 character in the first position instructs the reader to apply GS1 interpretation, and further FNC1 characters separate variable-length elements. GS1 caps a symbol at 48 data characters, so longer combinations are split across concatenated symbols.

Substrate and print method

The two formats exist partly because corrugated board is a poor printing surface. ITF-14 specifies a minimum bar or space; fundamental sizing unit." data-category="Barcode Anatomy & Structure">X-dimension of 0.495 mm and a 32 mm bar height, coarse enough for flexographic printing directly onto the case, and it frames the symbol with bearer bars: a heavy rectangle that causes a partial scan to fail rather than return a truncated number.

GS1-128 specifies a 0.25 mm minimum X-dimension and a 31.75 mm bar height, which calls for a printed label rather than direct case printing. That label is normally produced at the packing line, which is convenient, since batch, date, and serial values become known only at that moment.

Where each fits the workflow

A case printed at the box plant, weeks before it is filled, can carry only information known at that time, which is the item identity. ITF-14 is printed there. A logistics label applied at the end of the packing line can carry everything known at pack time, which is what GS1-128 exists to hold. The two are sequential layers rather than alternatives, and cases in regulated food and pharmaceutical supply chains commonly carry both.

Reader behaviour

Both are linear symbologies read by any laser scanner or imager. A reader returns the fourteen digits of an ITF-14 as a plain string, and the receiving system must know from context that the string is a GTIN-14. A GS1-128 payload is self-describing, so middleware parses the Application Identifiers and routes each element to the correct field without prior agreement between trading partners. That difference matters most in cross-docking and third-party logistics, where the receiving party may not know the sender's conventions.

Which to choose

Choose ITF-14

  • The symbol is printed directly onto corrugated board with the case artwork.
  • The case needs trade item identity only, with no batch, date, or serial data.
  • Print quality on the substrate cannot support a 0.25 mm X-dimension.

Choose GS1-128

  • Batch, expiry date, serial number, or net weight must travel with the case.
  • Trading partners parse Application Identifiers rather than agreeing a fixed field layout.
  • The label is produced at pack time, when attribute data is finally known.

Recommendation

The two answer different questions and frequently appear on the same case. Where only identity is required and the symbol is printed with the case artwork, ITF-14 suffices; where batch, date, or serial data must accompany the shipment, GS1-128 is the only one of the two that can carry it.
