Stacked symbologies bridge the gap between traditional linear barcodes and full 2D matrix codes by arranging multiple rows of linear symbols on top of each other, achieving higher data density while remaining compatible with linear scanner hardware that sweeps in a single horizontal plane. This architectural compromise made stacked codes especially valuable during the transition period when 2D imaging scanners were expensive and linear CCD scanners were already widely deployed.
