Aztec Code
A concentric square bull's-eye at the centre of the symbol identifies Aztec Code and removes the quiet zone requirement that surrounds most two-dimensional symbologies, because the finder pattern is interior rather than peripheral. Andrew Longacre developed it at Welch Allyn in 1995. Capacity reaches 3,832 alphanumeric or 3,067 numeric characters, and the symbol grows outward in layers as the payload increases. Rail and airline ticketing adopted it because the central finder tolerates the angles, reflections, and variable brightness of a code displayed on a phone screen. Modules measure 0.254 mm at nominal size, the symbol is square, and binary payloads are supported. Aztec is not a GS1 data carrier.
