Barcode Master Data: GDSN & Product Data Synchronization
How the Global Data Synchronisation Network (GDSN) ensures barcode master data is consistent across trading partners worldwide.
Barcode Master Data: GDSN & Product Data Synchronization
The Global Data Synchronisation Network (GDSN) is the GS1-managed platform for exchanging standardized product master data between trading partners. It ensures that the data behind a barcode, such as product name, dimensions, ingredients, and images, is accurate and consistent worldwide.
The Master Data Problem
Without data synchronization, product information discrepancies are rampant:
- Retailer A has a different product description than Retailer B
- Package dimensions in the buyer's system do not match the seller's
- Allergen information is missing or outdated
- Product images show the wrong packaging
GDSN solves this by creating a single source of truth that all trading partners reference.
How GDSN Works
- Brand owner publishes product data to a certified GDSN Data Pool (e.g., 1WorldSync, Syndigo, PDRN)
- Data pool validates the data against GS1 standards
- Retailer subscribes to the brand's products through their own data pool
- Data syncs automatically when the brand updates any attribute
- Changes propagate to all subscribed trading partners simultaneously
Data Attributes
GDSN supports thousands of product attributes organized into categories:
| Category | Example Attributes |
|---|---|
| Identification | GTIN, brand name, product description |
| Dimensions | Height, width, depth, weight (per packaging level) |
| Hierarchy | Inner pack, case, pallet configuration |
| Trade | Country of origin, target market, start date |
| Nutrition | Calories, fat, protein, allergens |
| Safety | Hazmat codes, SDS requirements |
| Digital | Product images, marketing copy |
GTIN as the Key
Every GDSN record is keyed by GTIN and target market. The GTIN scanned from the barcode is the lookup key to retrieve all master data. This makes the barcode the physical link between the product and its digital information.
Benefits
- Accuracy: Single source eliminates data discrepancies
- Speed: New product launches reach retailers in hours, not weeks
- Compliance: Regulatory data (nutrition, allergens) is standardized
- Automation: No manual data entry at the retailer side
- Cost reduction: Industry estimates $1-3 saved per product per year
GDSN and E-Commerce
Online marketplaces increasingly require GDSN-quality product data:
- Complete product descriptions and attributes
- High-resolution images from multiple angles
- Accurate dimensions for shipping cost calculation
- Regulatory compliance data (nutritional info, warnings)
Some retailers now mandate GDSN as the data onboarding method for new suppliers.
