Postal symbologies were designed specifically for high-speed automated mail processing, encoding destination routing information in formats optimized for the narrow, elongated label areas on envelopes and packages. Unlike retail barcodes that must be read by stationary scanner beams, postal codes must be reliably decoded by scanners moving at high speed relative to mail pieces traveling on conveyor systems in varying lighting conditions.
