Chọn định dạng mã vạch phù hợp cho dự án của bạn
A decision framework for selecting the best barcode symbology based on data type, scanning environment, label size, and industry requirements.
Choosing the Right Barcode Format
With dozens of barcode symbologies available, selecting the right one requires evaluating your data requirements, physical constraints, scanning environment, and industry standards. This guide provides a structured decision framework.
Step 1: Identify Your Data
Start with what you need to encode:
- Numeric only (8-14 digits): EAN-13, UPC-A, EAN-8, or ITF-14
- Alphanumeric (short strings): Code 128 or Code 39
- Structured supply chain data: GS1-128 or GS1 DataMatrix
- Large data (>100 characters): Data Matrix or PDF417
- URLs for consumers: QR Code
Step 2: Check Industry Requirements
Many industries mandate specific symbologies:
- Retail POS: EAN-13 or UPC-A (GS1 standard)
- Outer shipping cases: ITF-14 or GS1-128
- Healthcare (FDA UDI): Data Matrix with GS1 AIs for pharma and food traceability." data-category="2D & Matrix Symbologies">GS1 DataMatrix or GS1-128
- Automotive: Code 39 (AIAG standard) or Data Matrix
- Defense (US DoD): Code 39 (MIL-STD-130) or Data Matrix
- Airline boarding passes: Aztec Code (IATA BCBP)
Step 3: Evaluate Physical Constraints
Consider the available label space and substrate:
- Tiny items (<10mm): Data Matrix (can be as small as 2.5mm)
- Corrugated board: ITF-14 with bearer bars (tolerates ink spread)
- Metal/glass: Data Matrix via direct part marking
- Curved surfaces: 2D codes handle curvature better than tall 1D codes
Step 4: Assess Scanning Environment
- Retail checkout: EAN-13 with omnidirectional laser scanners
- Warehouse: Code 128 or GS1-128 with handheld imagers
- High-speed conveyor: Code 128 or GS1-128 with tunnel scanners
- Consumer mobile: QR Code (native smartphone support)
- Damaged/dirty conditions: Data Matrix with high error correction
Step 5: Consider Future Needs
GS1's Sunrise 2027 initiative will enable 2D barcodes at retail POS. If you are designing a new system, consider whether adopting GS1 DataMatrix or GS1 Digital Link now will avoid a future migration.
Decision Matrix Summary

| Shipping labels | GS1-128 | Data Matrix |
| Small parts | Code 128 | Data Matrix |
| Consumer engagement | N/A | QR Code |
| ID documents | N/A | PDF417 |
