Wave Picking with Barcodes
Wave picking groups orders into batches processed together:
- WMS generates a wave of orders based on carrier cutoff times

- Picker scans their badge barcode to log in
- Handheld displays first pick location
- Picker scans the location barcode to confirm arrival
- Scans the product barcode to verify the correct SKU

Batch Picking
For high-volume operations with many single-item orders:
- Picker carries a cart with multiple order containers
- Each container has a barcode label for the order
- Picker scans the product at each location
- Scans the destination container to assign the item to the correct order
- One pass through the warehouse fills multiple orders simultaneously
Zone Picking
Large warehouses divide into zones, each staffed by dedicated pickers:
- Order is split into zone-specific pick lists
- Each zone picker picks their portion
- Items converge at a consolidation point
- Consolidator scans all items to verify complete order assembly
- Order proceeds to packing
Scan-to-Verify Packing
At the packing station:
- Packer scans the order barcode
- Display shows expected contents
- Packer scans each item as it goes into the box
- System checks off items and alerts for any missing or extra items
- When all items are scanned, the packing slip and shipping label are printed
- Packer scans the shipping label to close the order
This scan-to-verify process catches picking errors before the package leaves the building.
