A guide to the ISO/IEC standards that define barcode symbology specifications, from ISO 15420 (EAN/UPC) to ISO 16022 (Data Matrix).

Understanding Barcode Symbology Standards (ISO/IEC)

Every major barcode symbology is formally defined by an international standard published by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission). These standards specify encoding rules, dimensional tolerances, and quality requirements.

Why Standards Matter

Without standards, a barcode printed in Germany might not scan in Japan. ISO/IEC standards ensure interoperability by precisely defining every aspect of a barcode symbol: how characters map to bar patterns, what dimensions are acceptable, how check digits are calculated, and what print quality is required.

Key ISO/IEC Barcode Standards

Standard Symbology Scope
ISO/IEC 15420 EAN/UPC Encoding, dimensions, quality
ISO/IEC 15417 Code 128 Encoding, code sets, check character
ISO/IEC 16388 Code 39 Encoding, full ASCII extension
ISO/IEC 16390 Interleaved 2 of 5 Encoding, bearer bars
ISO/IEC 16022 Data Matrix ECC 200, sizes, encoding modes
ISO/IEC 15438 PDF417 Row structure, error correction
ISO/IEC 24778 Aztec Code Compact and full-range modes
ISO/IEC 24723 GS1 DataBar All DataBar variants
ISO/IEC 24724 gs1-composite-term/" class="glossary-term-link" data-term="GS1 Composite" data-definition="Linear barcode plus 2D composite for extra encoded data." data-category="2D & Matrix Symbologies">GS1 Composite CC-A, CC-B, CC-C components

Quality Verification Standards

Separate standards define how to measure barcode print quality:

  • ISO/IEC 15416: Linear barcode print quality (ABCDF grading)
  • ISO/IEC 15415: 2D barcode print quality (cell contrast, modulation)
  • ISO/IEC TR 29158: Direct part marking quality assessment

GS1 General Specifications

GS1 publishes the GS1 General Specifications, which layer business rules on top of ISO symbology standards. These define application identifiers, data structures, label placement, size targets, and human-readable text formatting. GS1 compliance is required by major retailers and regulated industries.

Application-Specific Standards

  • IATA Resolution 792: quiet zone needed." data-category="2D & Matrix Symbologies">Aztec Code on airline boarding passes
  • MIL-STD-130: Barcode marking of US military property
  • AIAG B-1: Barcode standards for the automotive industry
  • ISBT 128: Blood product labeling using Code 128

Staying Current

Standards are revised periodically. ISO/IEC 15420 (EAN/UPC) was most recently updated to include GS1 DataBar symbologies. Organizations should verify they are using the current edition and track upcoming revisions that might affect their barcode implementations.
