GS1 Verify & GEPIR: ऑनलाइन बारकोड सत्यापन
How to use GS1 Verify and GEPIR to validate barcode numbers, look up company information, and verify GTIN assignments.
GS1 Verify & GEPIR: Validating Barcodes Online
GS1 provides two key online tools for validating barcode numbers and looking up the companies behind them: GS1 Verify and GEPIR (Global Electronic Party Information Registry). These tools help businesses confirm barcode authenticity and resolve data disputes.
GS1 GEPIR
GEPIR is a distributed global directory that answers the question: "Who is the owner of this barcode number?"
How to use GEPIR (gepir.gs1.org):
- Enter a GTIN, GLN, or SSCC
- GEPIR queries the relevant GS1 Member Organization
- Returns: Company name, address, contact information, and GS1 prefix details
GEPIR is useful for:
- Verifying that a barcode number belongs to a legitimate GS1 member
- Identifying the company behind an unknown product barcode
- Resolving disputes about product authenticity
Limitations: GEPIR returns company-level information, not product-level data. It cannot tell you the product name or description associated with a specific GTIN.
GS1 Verify
GS1 Verify (verify.gs1.org) is a newer service that provides richer validation:
- Barcode validation: Confirms the GTIN format and check digit are correct
- Company lookup: Identifies the GS1 member who owns the prefix
- License status: Shows whether the GS1 membership is active
- Product data: Shows basic product information (when available in GS1 registries)
Validation Steps
When you receive a barcode you want to verify:
- Check the format: Is it a valid space." data-category="1D Linear Symbologies">EAN-8 barcodes." data-category="GS1 Standards & Identifiers">GTIN-8, UPC-A barcodes in North America." data-category="GS1 Standards & Identifiers">GTIN-12, EAN-13, the global standard." data-category="GS1 Standards & Identifiers">GTIN-13, or ITF-14 barcodes on cases and pallets." data-category="GS1 Standards & Identifiers">GTIN-14?
- Verify the check digit: Recalculate using the Modulo 10 algorithm
- Look up the prefix: Use GEPIR or GS1 Verify to confirm the company
- Check license status: Ensure the GS1 membership is current (lapsed memberships may indicate unauthorized use)
Common Issues Found
- Invalid check digit: Indicates a data entry error or counterfeit barcode
- Unregistered prefix: The barcode uses a number range not assigned by GS1
- Lapsed membership: The company's GS1 registration has expired
- Prefix mismatch: The company selling the product does not own the prefix
GS1 Registry Platform
GS1 is building a global registry that will link GTINs to product master data, not just company information. This platform will enable:
- Product-level lookup by GTIN
- Verification that a GTIN is allocated to a specific product
- Access to basic product attributes (description, brand, images)
- Integration with GS1 Digital Link resolution
API Access
For programmatic validation:
- GS1 Cloud: API access to verified product data by GTIN
- GEPIR API: Available for GS1 member organizations
- Open Product Data: Community-maintained databases (less authoritative)
Recommendations
- Validate all incoming GTINs from new suppliers before listing products
- Periodically re-verify your trading partners' GS1 membership status
- Use check digit validation as a first filter before expensive API lookups
- Report suspicious barcodes to GS1 for investigation
