ギフトカード・プリペイドバーコード: 有効化と利用
How gift cards and prepaid products use barcodes for activation at POS, balance tracking, and multi-retailer redemption networks.
Gift Cards & Prepaid Barcodes: Activation & Redemption
Gift cards and prepaid products use a sophisticated barcode system for activation at the point of sale, balance management, and redemption. The barcode on a gift card is inactive until scanned for purchase, preventing theft of unactivated cards.
Activation Flow
- Customer brings card to checkout: Card has a printed barcode but zero balance
- Cashier scans the card barcode: Typically Code 128 or EAN-13
- POS sends activation request: To the card network or retailer's gift card platform
- Platform activates the card: Links the barcode serial to a balance
- Customer pays: The activation amount is charged as a sale
- Card is live: Can now be used for purchases
Barcode Format
Gift card barcodes typically encode a unique serial number:
- Code 128: 16-20 digit serial number
- EAN-13: For cards sold in retail racks (treated as a product)
- Code 39: Legacy format in some systems
The serial number is distinct from any GS1 Standards & Identifiers">GTIN on the card packaging. The GTIN identifies the product type (e.g., "$25 gift card"), while the serial number identifies the specific card.
Security Features
- Activation lock: Card has no value until POS activation
- PIN protection: Hidden PIN under scratch-off panel for online use
- Tamper detection: Packaging designed to show if card has been removed
- Balance limits: Maximum stored value to limit fraud exposure
- Velocity checks: Limits on number of activations per transaction
Redemption at POS
- Customer presents the gift card at checkout
- Cashier scans the barcode (or customer enters the card number online)
- POS queries the gift card platform for available balance
- If balance is sufficient, the purchase amount is deducted
- Remaining balance is displayed on the receipt
- If balance is insufficient, the customer pays the difference with another method
Multi-Retailer Gift Card Networks
Third-party gift card networks (like InComm and Blackhawk) manage gift cards sold at one retailer for use at another. The barcode encodes:
- Network identifier
- Card serial number
- Retailer/brand identifier
The POS activation request is routed through the network to the appropriate brand's gift card platform.
Digital Gift Cards
Digital gift cards use barcodes displayed on screens:
- QR Code or Code 128 containing the card serial
- Sent via email or mobile app
- Scanned at POS or entered online
- Same activation and redemption flow as physical cards
Implementation Notes
- Ensure POS can handle split-tender transactions (gift card + other payment)
- Implement real-time balance checks at scan time
- Log all activation and redemption events for fraud monitoring
- Support balance inquiry without requiring a purchase
- Handle edge cases: expired cards, zero-balance returns, stolen cards
