GS1 General Specifications for Symbol Production

These specifications go beyond the ISO symbology standards to define business rules for commercial barcode use.

GS1 specifies target barcode sizes by symbology:

Placement Rules

GS1 provides detailed placement guidelines:

Retail products: - Preferred: Back panel, lower right quadrant - Alternative: Side panel or bottom - Never on the top (may be obscured by shelf edge) - Barcode orientation: Ladder (vertical bars) preferred for narrow packages

Cases and pallets: - Two adjacent sides for cases - Two adjacent sides for pallets, 400-800mm from ground - Avoid seams, tape locations, and areas subject to damage

Human-Readable Text

GS1 specifications define exactly how the text below the barcode must be formatted:

  • Font: OCR-B recommended, but other clear sans-serif fonts acceptable
  • EAN-13: First digit separated, then two groups of six: 5 901234 123457
  • UPC-A: First digit small, five digits, five digits, check digit small: 0 12345 67890 5
  • GS1-128: AIs in parentheses: (01)09506000134352(17)260630

Artwork Production

For producing barcode artwork:

  1. Generate the barcode as a vector file (EPS, PDF, or SVG)
  2. Set the target magnification and calculate dimensions
  3. Include quiet zones in the artwork
  4. Specify colors (PMS black on PMS white for maximum contrast)
  5. Apply any necessary bar-width-reduction/" class="glossary-term-link" data-term="bar width reduction" data-definition="Narrowing bars in prepress to compensate for ink spread." data-category="Printing & Quality">bar width reduction (BWR) for the printing process
  6. Do not add borders, decorations, or text within the quiet zones
