Barcode Substrate Guide: Paper, Polyester, Polypropylene & More

The label material (substrate) determines whether a barcode survives its intended environment. A perfect barcode printed on the wrong substrate can become unreadable within days. This guide covers the major substrate options.

Paper Labels

Paper is the most economical substrate but is vulnerable to moisture, chemicals, and tearing.

Testing Protocol

Before committing to a substrate:

  1. Print sample barcodes
  2. Verify grade with a barcode verifier
  3. Expose to actual conditions (temperature, moisture, chemicals, UV) for the intended label life
  4. Re-verify barcode grade after exposure
  5. Test adhesion (does the label stay on the product?)
  6. Verify no substrate-ink interaction (bleeding, smearing)
