How barcodes enable buy-online-pick-up-in-store (BOPIS), ship-from-store fulfillment, and cross-channel return processing.

Omnichannel Barcodes: BOPIS, Ship-from-Store & Returns

Modern retail operates across physical stores, e-commerce, marketplaces, and mobile. Barcodes tie these channels together by providing a consistent product identifier that works at every touchpoint.

Buy Online, Pick Up In Store (BOPIS)

BOPIS workflow with barcodes:

  1. Customer orders online: System checks store inventory by GS1 Standards & Identifiers">GTIN
  2. Store receives pick list: Items identified by barcode
  3. Associate picks items: Scans each product barcode to confirm correct item
  4. Staging: Places items in a pickup area with an order barcode label
  5. Customer arrives: Associate scans the order barcode and customer ID
  6. Handoff: Customer receives items, inventory is decremented

Key barcodes involved: - Product EAN-13: Identifies the item during picking - Order label barcode (Code 128): Groups items for the order - Customer confirmation barcode: QR code from confirmation email

Ship-from-Store

When stores fulfill online orders for shipping:

  1. Order routed to store: Based on inventory availability and proximity
  2. Associate picks items: Scans product barcodes against pick list
  3. Packing: Scans items into a shipping box, system generates shipping label
  4. Shipping label: GS1-128 with carrier barcode for tracking
  5. Carrier pickup: Scans label for tracking and routing

Cross-Channel Returns

Returns are the most complex omnichannel barcode scenario:

Scenario Process
Buy online, return to store Scan receipt barcode or order QR to find original transaction
Buy in store, return by mail Return label barcode links to original POS transaction
Buy from marketplace, return to store Marketplace order barcode mapped to internal system

The Order Barcode

Every omnichannel order receives a unique barcode that:

  • Links all items in the order to a single transaction
  • Tracks the order across fulfillment stages
  • Enables customer identification at pickup
  • Facilitates returns regardless of channel

Typically encoded in Code 128 or QR Code format.

Inventory Visibility Requirements

Omnichannel fulfillment demands near-perfect inventory accuracy:

  • Ship-from-store: Overselling creates customer disappointment
  • BOPIS: Picking failures require order cancellation or substitution
  • Reserve online: Inventory must be committed immediately

Barcode scanning at every inventory movement maintains the accuracy these services require.

Implementation Considerations

  • Ensure product barcodes are consistent across all channel systems (same GTIN everywhere)
  • Design order barcodes that work in both digital (screen) and print formats
  • Train store associates on omnichannel barcode workflows
  • Integrate carrier barcode generation into the store shipping workstation
  • Enable returns lookup by scanning either the product barcode or the order barcode
