When to use ITF-14 for case identification vs GS1-128 for detailed logistics data — label placement, printing, and retailer compliance.

Pallet & Case Labeling: ITF-14 vs GS1-128

Outer case and pallet labeling requires choosing between ITF-14 for simple identification and GS1-128 for detailed supply chain data. Many logistics operations use both, leveraging each symbology's strengths.

When to Use ITF-14

ITF-14 is the right choice for:

  • Simple case identification: GS1 Standards & Identifiers">gtin-14/" class="glossary-term-link" data-term="GTIN-14" data-definition="14-digit identifier for ITF-14 barcodes on cases and pallets." data-category="GS1 Standards & Identifiers">GTIN-14 only (indicator + EAN-13, the global standard." data-category="GS1 Standards & Identifiers">GTIN-13)
  • Corrugated board printing: Wide bars tolerate ink spread
  • Flexographic printing: Can be printed directly on the carton
  • Cost-sensitive applications: Simpler, cheaper printing

When to Use GS1-128

GS1-128 is required when:

  • SSCC tracking: Serial shipping container codes for logistics
  • Batch/lot data: Traceability information on the label
  • Expiration dates: Date data encoded in the barcode
  • Trading partner requirements: Most major retailers mandate GS1-128

Side-by-Side Comparison

Feature ITF-14 GS1-128
Data GTIN-14 only GTIN + batch + expiry + SSCC + more
Print tolerance Very high Moderate
Substrate Corrugated board Label stock
Bearer bars Required Not needed
X dimension 0.635-1.016mm 0.495mm minimum
Cost per case Very low (direct print) Low-moderate (label + application)

Dual Labeling

Many supply chains use both:

  • ITF-14 printed directly on the case: For basic product identification
  • GS1-128 label applied to the case: For SSCC, batch, and date data

The ITF-14 identifies what is in the case. The GS1-128 label tracks the specific case through the supply chain.

Label Placement Rules

GS1 specifies label placement for maximum scan efficiency:

  • Cases: Label on the long side, within the bottom right third
  • Pallets: Labels on two adjacent sides, 400-800mm from ground
  • Avoid: Labels on the top (hidden when stacked), directly on seams or flaps

Printing Considerations

For direct printing on corrugated:

  • Use ITF-14 with bearer bars
  • Apply bar-width-reduction/" class="glossary-term-link" data-term="bar width reduction" data-definition="Narrowing bars in prepress to compensate for ink spread." data-category="Printing & Quality">bar width reduction (BWR) to compensate for ink spread
  • Test print quality on actual production corrugated stock
  • Verify with a barcode verifier after printing

For labels on cases:

  • Use GS1-128 on label stock
  • Thermal transfer printing for durability
  • Apply labels with automated applicators for consistency
  • Verify print quality inline during production
