Data Matrix packs the most data into the smallest area and recovers from damage across 30 percent of the symbol, which is why direct part marking standardised on it. PDF417 carries slightly smaller payloads but shapes itself to flat printed documents. Available symbol area, not capacity, usually decides between them.

Grid against stack

Data Matrix is a true two-dimensional grid. A solid L-shaped finder occupies two adjacent sides, an alternating clock track occupies the other two, and a reader derives symbol dimensions and orientation from those borders before decoding the interior cells. PDF417 stacks rows of one-dimensional codewords, each row self-delimiting, so a linear laser scanner sweeping across the symbol accumulates rows one pass at a time.

That structural difference sets the minimum practical size. A Data Matrix symbol encoding a short serial number can be two or three millimetres square. PDF417 must accommodate at least three rows, plus start and stop patterns on every one of them, so an identical payload occupies a noticeably larger footprint.

Capacity and damage tolerance

Data Matrix reaches 2,335 alphanumeric or 3,116 numeric characters; PDF417 reaches 1,850 alphanumeric or 2,710 numeric. Both use Reed-Solomon error correction. Data Matrix at its standard ECC 200 level recovers from damage affecting up to 30 percent of the symbol, and that figure explains its adoption for direct part marking: a dot-peened symbol on a turbine blade or a laser-etched symbol on a surgical instrument accumulates wear, corrosion, and cleaning damage across a service life measured in years.

Marking method

The two formats suit different marking processes. Data Matrix cells are square and contiguous, which dot peening, laser etching, and chemical etching all reproduce acceptably on metal and plastic. PDF417 requires fine linear elements held to consistent width along each row, a requirement met by thermal transfer and laser printing onto labels and cards but not by most direct marking processes.

Which to choose

Choose Data Matrix

  • The symbol must be marked directly onto a part rather than printed on a label.
  • Available marking area is measured in millimetres.
  • The mark must survive abrasion, cleaning, or corrosion over a long service life.
  • GS1 Application Identifier data is required in a two-dimensional carrier.

Choose PDF417

  • The payload is printed on a flat card or document where a quiet zone can be reserved.
  • The available area is long and narrow, or short and wide, suiting the 3:1 to 1:3 aspect range.
  • A governing standard such as AAMVA names it.
  • Linear laser scanners form part of the installed reader base.

Recommendation

Data Matrix is the default wherever area is scarce or the symbol is applied directly to a part. PDF417 remains the right choice on printed documents, and particularly where an identity or transport standard already names it.
