PDF417
Stacking is the structural idea behind PDF417: rows of linear codewords sit one above another, each row carrying start and stop patterns plus a row indicator, so a reader can reassemble the symbol even when rows are scanned out of order or partially missed. Ynjiun Wang designed it at Symbol Technologies in 1991. Capacity reaches 1,850 alphanumeric or 2,710 numeric characters with selectable Reed-Solomon error correction, and the aspect ratio can be varied from 3:1 to 1:3 to suit the available label area. United States driver's licences, airline boarding passes, and a range of government identity documents specify it. Modules are 0.254 mm at nominal size with two-module quiet zones, and binary payloads are supported.
