Code 128
Three interchangeable character sets give Code 128 the highest data density available among linear symbologies. Set A covers upper-case letters and control characters, Set B covers the printable ASCII range including lower case, and Set C packs two numeric digits into one eleven-module character, halving the width of numeric payloads. Shift and code characters allow the sets to be mixed inside a single symbol. Computer Identics released the design in 1981; it uses a 0.25 mm X-dimension, ten-module quiet zones, and a modulo-103 check character calculated over weighted character values. Practical payloads run to roughly eighty characters before symbol width becomes unmanageable. The same encoding underlies GS1-128, which adds Application Identifiers and an FNC1 prefix, but Code 128 on its own is not a GS1 data carrier.
