EAN-13 vs UPC-A
UPC-A is a twelve-digit subset of the thirteen-digit EAN-13. Prefixing a UPC-A number with a zero produces the equivalent EAN-13, both resolve to the same GS1 Global Trade Item Number, and the two symbols occupy identical width at nominal size. The real difference is which GS1 member organisation issued the company prefix.

One number system, two representations
EAN-13 and UPC-A are not competing symbologies. Both encode a GS1 Global Trade Item Number, both use identical bar patterns for the digits they share, and both close with a Mod 10 check digit calculated over alternating weights of three and one. What differs commercially is issuance. GS1 US allocated UPC company prefixes to North American brand owners from 1974, and the EAN system extended the scheme in 1977 with a prefix range identifying the issuing GS1 member organisation. A prefix beginning 00 to 13 originates in North America, 30 to 37 in France, 45 and 49 in Japan. The prefix identifies who assigned the number, not where the product was manufactured.
Where the thirteenth digit lives
An EAN-13 symbol is exactly as wide as a UPC-A symbol despite carrying one more digit, because the leading digit is never drawn as bars. It is encoded implicitly in the parity pattern of the six left-hand digits: each of those digits is printed using either an odd-parity or an even-parity variant, and the sequence of choices across the six positions identifies the first digit. Quiet zones and truncation
Both symbols require an eleven-module quiet zone on the left and seven on the right. Those margins are the most frequent cause of scan failure in retail printing, because artwork placed too close to the guard bars removes the blank area a decoder uses to locate the symbol edges. Truncating bar height below the specified 22.85 mm reduces the number of scan paths crossing every bar and is discouraged for the same reason.
Practical selection
Selection is rarely a design decision. A brand owner receives a GS1 company prefix and encodes whatever length that prefix produces. Items sold only in the United States and Canada are commonly printed as UPC-A because North American prefixes yield twelve-digit numbers, while items carrying a prefix from any other GS1 member organisation are printed as EAN-13. North American retailers have been required to accept EAN-13 since 2005, so a thirteen-digit symbol scans in every market.
Which to choose
Choose EAN-13
- The GS1 company prefix issued to the brand owner produces a thirteen-digit GTIN.
- The item is distributed outside North America, where thirteen-digit numbers are the norm.
- A single artwork has to serve several markets.
Choose UPC-A
- A twelve-digit GS1 US company prefix is already assigned to the item.
- Existing packaging artwork and printing plates carry the twelve-digit symbol.
- A trading partner specification calls for GTIN-12 explicitly.
Recommendation
Neither symbol is technically preferable, because the company prefix issued to the brand owner determines the length. Since North American retailers have been required to accept EAN-13 since 2005, the thirteen-digit symbol is the safer choice when one artwork must serve several markets.
